When it comes to building a brand that feels cohesive and recognizable, nailing your color palette is essential. It’s one of the easiest and most impactful ways to communicate your values and create a consistent look across everything you share—whether it’s social posts, your website, packaging, or advertisements.
Think about brands like Coca-Cola. Sure, their logo is instantly recognizable, but that classic red? It’s everywhere—from cans to billboards to holiday trucks. It’s a color that’s unmistakable and instantly connects you to their brand.
So color is a quiet powerhouse in marketing, but let’s be real: choosing the right palette can feel like a daunting task. To help, we’re breaking down how we guide our clients in finding their perfect brand colors.
Step 01 – Define Your Brand Values and the Emotional Impact You Want to Create with Your Brand Colors: What Do You Want To Make People Feel?
Your brand’s colors should do more than just looking good—they need to tell your story. That’s why we always start with the heart of your brand: its values, personality, and how you want people to feel when they interact with it. Colors tap into emotions, so we want to be intentional.
Ask yourself:
What does my brand stand for?
What feelings or emotions do I want my audience to experience when they see my brand?
How would I describe my brand if it were a person—what traits would stand out?
What kind of atmosphere do I want to create through my brand’s presence?
What words or ideas do I want to be associated with my brand?
Step 02 – Understand Your Audience’s Preferences and Choose Colors That Speak to Them
Great branding isn’t just about you; it’s about connecting with your people – those you want to serve. So let’s take a moment to think about your audience. What do they care about? What draws them in? Your color palette should reflect not only your values but also the personality and preferences of your audience.
Things to consider:
Who are my people, and what matters to them?
What kinds of brands or aesthetics are they naturally drawn to?
What makes my audience excited or inspired?
What lifestyle does my ideal customer live?
Step 03 – Color psychology in branding: match colors to your values and emotions
Here’s where the magic happens! Your brand colors aren’t random—they carry meaning and evoke emotions. The trick is to align the emotional tone of your brand with the psychology behind color.
Here’s a quick cheat sheet to get you started:
Red: Bold, passionate, energetic, excitement, focus
Pink: Warm, caring, feminine, sweet, intuitive
Orange: Optimistic, friendly, motivated, happiness, freedom
Yellow: Joyful, uplifting, cheerful, happiness
Green: Restful, natural, growth-oriented, healing, safety
Blue: Trustworthy, calm, confident, peace
Brown: Grounded, dependable, simple, protection
Black: Sophisticated, powerful, professional, dramatic
White: Clean, fresh, peaceful, pure, light
Gold: Luxurious, abundant, charismatic, confidence
One tip we swear by: start with visuals instead of diving straight into palettes. Collect imagery that feels like your brand (Pinterest is a great place to start!), then pull colors from those. It’s a great way to let your brand’s vibe guide the palette.
Step 04 – Create a color palette that offers flexibility
When we put together a final color palette, we aim to give clients something versatile and easy to use. This depends on the brand’s personality—whether it’s minimalistic or more vibrant. For more subtle, clean brands, we might stick to softer, neutral tones. For brands with more energy, we’ll introduce bolder shades. The goal is to create a palette with 2-3 neutral colors and at least 1 or 2 accent colors. These accents can be bright, but not always—they’re used strategically for key moments like calls to action or promotions. The neutral colors are perfect for your everyday content, while the accent colors grab attention when you want to highlight something important. A balanced mix ensures your audience can easily spot what’s routine and what’s urgent.
